Shopify's quarterly API versions break apps on a predictable — but relentless — schedule
Shopify releases a new API version every quarter and sunsets versions after a year. Each version can rename fields, restructure queries, and remove endpoints across both REST and GraphQL. If you maintain a Shopify app or custom storefront, missing one version cycle can cascade into a mandatory emergency migration.
“We missed the 2025-04 API version migration window. When the 2024-04 version got sunsetted, our inventory sync app broke for 200+ merchants simultaneously. It took a week of firefighting to get everyone back online.”

Example: What an alert looks like
API version 2026-01: Product.variants GraphQL connection now requires first/last argument
The variants field on the Product type no longer supports unbounded queries. You must pass a first or last argument. Previously, omitting these returned all variants.
REST Admin API: /admin/api/products.json deprecated — use GraphQL Admin API
The REST products endpoint is deprecated in the 2026-01 API version. Shopify recommends migrating to the GraphQL Admin API's products query. REST support will be removed in 2027-01.
